The purpose of the design of the imaging optical system is to make the "object" into an "image" on the image plane. The imaging ability of any imaging optical system is limited, and it can only form a perfect image of a part of the object space. Therefore, in order to obtain better image quality, we need to impose some restrictions on the light entering the optical system, and improve the quality of the image by discarding those lights with poor imaging quality. The common method is to place some thin metal sheets with central openings to reasonably limit the width, position and imaging range of the imaging beam, etc. These metal sheets are called Aperture Stop or Shielding Mask.
There are many types of Aperture Stop / Shielding Mask, the most common ones are Field Aperture Mask, Micro Hole Mask Aperture, Vignetting Aperture Mask, Stray Light Aperture Mask:
1. Field aperture mask. The field of view refers to the range that our optical system can observe. The purpose of the field aperture is to limit this observation range, filter out the poor imaging quality part outside the observation range, and leave the part with good imaging quality. The field aperture is often set on the intermediate image plane of the system.
2. Micro hole mask aperture limits the size of the aperture angle, that is, the solid angle of the imaging beam of the object point on the axis, and will also affect the imaging beam of the object point outside the axis. The presence of aperture diaphragm will affect the resolution, brightness, depth of field, etc. of the system.
3. Vignetting aperture mask. Vignetting refers to the situation where the off-axis object point is partially intercepted. The diaphragm that can produce vignetting is the vignetting diaphragm.
4. Stray light aperture diaphragm. Stray ligh which refers to the abnormal transmission light that can hit the image surface through the optical system but is not needed by us. Therefore, the stray light diaphragm will not limit the imaging beam of the system, but is only used to control the ghost image produced by the refractive surface, the reflected light of the inner wall of the system, and other unnecessary light.
